Desolation Sound
      A 3-Month Cruise in Paradise

Welcome to this latest feature at Omega. In these pages, I will describe a cruise I made aboard our sailboat Y-Knot to Desolation Sound and points north in the summer of 1987. The cruise lasted 93 days. Some of the highlights included two visits to the famed Princess Louisa Inlet, a falling overboard emergency, sailing in a big lagoon for nearly one week (where no sailboat had ever been before), an encounter with George (one big bear it was!) and a near capsize in the Northumberland Strait. Other than that, all went well.

But the one feature I remember most from that cruise was the near perfect weather! I experienced rain on only three occasions! That's right... There were several 'overcast' days but only three days where it rained! Of course, it may have rained on a few more occasions at night but then, I was sleeping and never noticed.

When you are alone for over three months, there is much time to keep a log and I have taken advantage of that fact. This story will include several entries taken verbatim from the log. Scattered throughout this article will be nearly 100 photographs and maps. The maps will be added at a later date. You are invited to listen to some of the best musical selections as you progress through the cruise.

Finalized the packing of boat. Picked up engine this morning. It runs like it never did before. It will be a joy to have it run on two cylinders once more and not to have to hold the throttle handle all the time. I also installed the stereo deck and speakers. Works fantastic.
